John David
Geery became interested in photography while a
journalism student at the University of Utah in
Salt Lake City. He bought a camera to illustrate
the articles he was writing for the school
newspaper.
John
perfected his color printing techniques while
working in a professional color lab in Utah.
After a year in the lab, he moved to Idaho and
worked for a company as staff photographer. He
shot advertising and catalog photographs for
three years. He started his fine art business
while living in Idaho, with a collection of
western scenes including the Grand Tetons and
southern Utah.
Originally an
easterner, John returned to New England in 1984,
after nine years of living in the west. He was
initially concerned the east wouldn't be as
photographically inspiring as the grandiose
west. While totally different, the great
diversity of seasons and intimacy of the eastern
landscape quickly won him over.
John's
photographic technique and equipment has evolved
over the years. While living in the west, he
used medium format equipment, as the larger
negative seemed to match the larger landscapes.
East coast shooting lends itself to 35mm, for
the ability to work quickly and still capture
details. John considers his most important piece
of equipment to be a tripod.
After taking a
photo, John spends many hours in the darkroom,
fine tuning color balance, density, and cropping
until he is satisfied with the final print.
He is also currently working in a "digital
darkroom" to produce his new work.
